Here you can see several iterations of the Cosi design brought to life by our workroom. The front arm panels provide a virtually limitless level of customization to the chair, with options to utilize metal, wood, lacquer, parchment, or self/contrast fabric on both the panels and matching swivel or recessed base.

The Cosi design is a work in progress, constantly evolving as our clients riff on the concept. Most importantly, this chair is a supremely functional piece that sits as beautifully as it looks. Cosi’s form is a snug, inviting, experiment in coziness!

-Image 1: Latest iteration of the concept, the “Adonis” chair. It sits slightly wider than the original and features inset banding on the chair’s body to break up the ensemble and emphasize the height of the barrel back.

@elizabethbauerdesign provided the working image in slide 5 and the maximum dimensions not to be exceeded. Determining the scale and proportion, in addition to bringing all the design elements together from an image, requires years of knowledge and expertise. No prototypes here!

How do you turn a linear design into a soft, curva

How do you turn a linear design into a soft, curvaceous sofa, all without producing an overly bulbous piece of furniture? As with most new builds, it’s a matter of reverse engineering.

Our obvious starting point was building the angular frame (last image). The sculpting of the body was a multi-layered process, with the foundation done in hand stitched horse hair and springs for added comfort.

Due to its very rounded edges, we decided that the fabric had to waterfall down the sides of the seat and that the corners should be done Turkish style. The uneven back height (image 4) where the two sections meet was an intentional detail.

Roberto labors away, fastidiously ensuring the cord trim fits perfectly into hand-cut channels. What is the purpose of channeling into the sides of this three-sided bed platform, you may ask? ... It’s so that the cord does not create bumps along the top and bottom surfaces of the exposed platform.
